2009 :: Infrastructure: even more important in the situation

Challenges and opportunities well beyond the stadiums

As soon as Brazil was chosen by the International Soccer Federation (Fifa) to host the 2014 World Cup, Abdib started a series of meetings between companies and public authorities, which resulted in the signature of a term of technical cooperation with the federal government, represented by the Ministry of Sports, and with the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF), with the objective of preparing studies to size the capacity and need for investment in infrastructure (electrical power, ports, airports, urban mobility, basic sanitation and telecommunications) and public services (health, safety and hotels) in the Country to support the tournament.

The ceremony of signature of the term of technical cooperation was held on May 13 in Brasília, and had the participation of the president of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the minister of Sports, Orlando Silva, and the president of CBF, Ricardo Teixeira. From that point on, Abdib created a workgroup involving more than 50 people, among businessmen, consultants and specialists, to prepare the study. All the candidate cities were visited and the work will be concluded in May 2009.

The project, as established in the term of cooperation, covers the performance of studies that shall mention all the infrastructure facilities necessary for the organization of the 2014 World Cup, regardless of the cities in which the events will be held, including cost estimates, which will later be compared to the investment plans of the Union, states, municipalities and Federal District.

Abdib considers that the World Cup is an event of enormous magnitude, which generates numerous business opportunities for Brazilian companies, and that enables combining efforts to also promote significant improvement in the quality and quantity of the Countrys infrastructure. A project of this size needs to count on the massive and predominant participation of private initiative for the undertakings to be ready as planned and leave a legacy of economic and social growth and development after the holding of the games.
